When St-Germain approached me to create a cocktail inspired by the Jazz Age Lawn Party, I was so excited. This event is easily my favorite to-do of the year, so I found it a challenge worth taking. When thinking about the delicate nature of St-Germain and the wild-eyed passion of the twenties, it was a natural pairing for me to merge the two together. The twenties and thirties were still very important times for absinthe, and were seen as tools for the artistic savants. I kept it simple with absinthe and St-Germain, and a touch of grenadine to lightly sweeten the drink. I wanted to make a drink that could be easily replicated at home, and would let St-Germain shine. You don’t need a million ingredients to make a great cocktail.
While I was at the Jazz Age Lawn Party, I realized how perfect the combination was, too. The soft, composed outfits that were worn by everybody there, mixed with the energy and drive from Michael Arenella and The Dreamland Orchestra; it felt very fitting. I snapped a couple shots of some of my favorite outfits there - which was a difficult thing to narrow down, because of how great everybody looked!
Make this drink when in need of whimsy, mixed with a bit of elegance. Grab your boater hat or your parasol and enjoy the authenticity that St-Germain delivers.
St-Germain Absinthe Frappé
1/4 oz Grenadine
1 oz Vieux Pontarlier Absinthe
(Brandied Cherries for garnish)
Boston Mixing Tins/Mixing Glass
Build your ingredients in your mixing tin, fill half of the mixing tin with crushed ice and lock it together.
Shake/Whip the drink together until the mixture is loose (about 30 seconds), as you want to introduce enough dilution to balance the absinthe.
Tumble the entire contents into a wine glass and top with additional crushed ice.
Add a straw and a brandied cherry, for garnish.
